When Shirley Cooper could no longer live independently, she knew it was time to go home to her Lord. She passed away peacefully at Royal Jubilee Hospital on May 29, 2026.
Shirley was born at Resthaven Hospital in Sidney, BC on October 13th, 1932, to parents, Gordon and Hazel Bowcott. She grew up in Sidney and Victoria and often reminisced about childhood summers spent at her grandparent’s home on Salt Spring Island. Her adult life revolved around her home, family, and church. A devoted Christian, she served breakfast to Victoria’s homeless and gave generously to religious and other charitable organizations. She greeted family, friends, and strangers alike with a cheerful smile, a kind word, and a warm hug.
Shirley was a devoted homemaker with a relentless sense of duty. Her children and her late husband, Ron Cooper, always came home to a clean, welcoming house and a good meal, while holiday celebrations were a veritable feast. Having inherited her family’s baking skills, Shirley made the best pies in the world.
Shirley, like all of us, had her share of regrets yet she never faltered on her quest just to be a good person. Her life was not always easy, but she endured pain and weathered life’s storms with remarkable courage, grace, and perseverance. A natural giver whose humility seemed to be her second name, Shirley remained steadfast in her faith and confident that a reward in heaven awaited her at the end of life’s journey.
Shirley is predeceased by her husband, Ron, and granddaughter, Jennifer, and survived by her children, John (Gina), Carol (Burt), and Lynne (Sandy); her grandchildren, Clint (Nadine), Danny, Angela (Don), and Jamie; her great-grandchild, Treydon; and her sister, Betty Blain, with whom she shared a rare and enduring bond of sisterly love and closeness.
A joint celebration of the lives of Shirley and Betty will be announced at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family gratefully requests that those wishing to honor Shirley’s memory consider donating to a charity of their choice.
