
Shirley Mooney Aabjerg, only daughter of Orrin “Red” and Berneldine “Bee” Mooney of Saskatoon, passed away in Victoria B.C. on January 14, 2025. Shirley made British Columbia her home starting in 1968.
She was the Manager of Library Services for Pacific Press at the Vancouver Sun and Vancouver Province, researching background information to assist journalists,
Shirley was a pioneer in the digitization of newspaper archives, and received wide acclaim for this work throughout North America.
Shirley also took great pride in her role as President of the North American Special Libraries Association.
Shirley also authored or co-authored three books: Vancouver, An Illustrated Chronology in 1986; Relatively Speaking, about the Mooney Clan from Monaghan, 2011; and In Their Footsteps, an Elves Family history.
Additionally, for more than 20 years Shirley and Bent dedicated themselves to Victoria’s Pearson College, becoming whole hearted supporters and hosts for students from across the Globe. Many have stayed in touch, and returned to Victoria to visit them over the years.
Shirley was pre deceased by her husband Bent Aajberg, her parents, her brother Barry and his wife Anne. She is survived by Bent’s children, Beverly, Wayne and Lise, granddaughters Michelle and Kristal and great grandchildren, Novi and Mikey.
She is also survived by brother John (Barb), Jennifer and Glen; and Barry’s children, Margot, Patrick and Scott, and their families.
