Steve passed away peacefully at home in Victoria, BC at the age of 85. As a former submariner, he fought a good fight and was taken home to his Heavenly Father.  He will be deeply missed by his loving wife, Ruth, of 63 years; his 5 children, Rick (Miseon), Debi (Norman), Stephen (Shofung), Cathy (Paul), Carolyn (Ernie); his 15 grandchildren; his 13 great-grandchildren; and his brother Richard.

Steve was born in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan but was a true west coaster. He loved Vancouver Island and the people who made it their home. It was here that he learned to dive and became a submariner with the Canadian Navy. His second love, after family and God, was being a geologist and scouring the island for beautiful gems. He found those and more, but his most precious find was at the place he called home, his family.

Steve was an avid gardener, a rock wall builder and a fruit tree lover. Shawnigan lake was a favorite destination for family and friends to stay and play. Trips to Disneyland, Hawaii, Okanagan, and even Sooke will never be forgotten. Christmas time was always so much fun – family, relatives, and friends were in abundance.

Love was always in the house. Memories were everywhere, Grandma Smith asleep on the couch with Buffy and Trouper snuggled up. These memories are nothing compared to what dad meant to us.

Steve was such a man of God who walked with integrity and blessed all those who knew him with his insight, wisdom, and kindness. His gentle spirit, his bright smile, his cheery disposition brought such joy to us all.

Earth’s loss heavens gain. Until then we will hold onto the day that we will see him again.

   Love you always and forever.

A Memorial Service will be held to Celebrate Steve’s Life on Saturday, February 3, 2018, at 2 pm at Church of Nazarene, 4277 Quadra Street.

Papa, you brought great joy into our lives and blessed us to know that you are well-cared. I still remember you and my sister (Megan), feeding ducks together as a gathering. Papa, you comforted me and guided me for my whole life. You are watching us now, as we are getting older and bigger. You gave me more than I need, but most of all you gave me love. You treated me and our family with respect, care, and love. We love you very much and is dearest to all. We will miss you.

    Sincerely yours,

    Granddaughter
