Susan Hetwig Gill (née Holl)

January 22, 1925 – January 26, 2025

January 22, 1925 – January 26, 2025

Susan passed away peacefully in Victoria, BC, just four days after celebrating her 100th birthday. Born in Cologne, Germany, Susan immigrated to Canada with her family in 1931, arriving through Ellis Island, NY.  She grew up in Montreal where she met the love of her life, Eric Gill.  After marriage in Montreal, they settled in Victoria where they built a beautiful life and family.

Susan’s greatest love was spending time with her family, followed closely by her cherished dogs. She was a longtime member of the Uplands Golf Club and found joy in golfing, hunting, and fishing. She had fond memories of time spent with Eric and loved ones at Qualicum Beach and Shawnigan Lake, creating memories that will be treasured by her family forever.

Predeceased by her beloved husband Eric in 2011, Susan is survived by her children, Greg (Karen) Gill, Rick (Diane) Gill, and Debbie (David) McCall, along with 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Susan’s remarkable life spanned a century of love, adventure, and dedication to those she held dear. Mom/Oma will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew her.

A Funeral & Celebration of Susan’s life will be held at 12 Noon on Saturday, February 1, 2025, in the Sequoia Centre at McCall Gardens, 4665 Falaise Drive, Victoria, BC.  The family would like to thank the wonderful care team at Mount St. Mary Hospital.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Sue’s memory to the BC SPCA in Victoria.  Condolences may be offered to the family below.

  1. My mother Helen Leonard has many fond memories of Sue at the Wellesley and loved sharing happy hour with her every single day. Sue was a wonderful person and always saw the best in people. Loved her laugh.

  7. Sonja and I were just thinking of Aunt Sue while sitting by a candle for her at our dinner table. It’s one thing to get to 100, but we were more awed by the manner she did it. Her phone calls for the last decade or so on my birthday were always a joy for Sonja and myself. She generally spoke in a solid voice while creating a feeling of serenity. She must have dealt with some discomfort or disappointment now and then, but it was never mentioned as more than a passing comment. She stuck to questions and answers about family members and hopes for everyone’s well-being. She was a wonderful ambassador of family affairs plus a great role model for the next round of octogenarians. She will be very much missed by us.
