June 27, 1959 - September 10, 2023

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved family member Susan Isabel Andrew.  Susan passed away peacefully on September 10, 2023, in Victoria British Columbia.

Susan was born on June 27, 1959 in St. John, New Brunswick, and was the youngest of five children. She was the devoted daughter of Isabel and Frank Andrew and loving younger sister to Rosemary Del Degan, all of whom predeceased her.

Susan will be deeply missed by brothers Bill (Denise), Frank (SanSan), John (Sue) and brother-in-law Aldo Del Degan as well as by nieces and a nephew, Jessica (John), Marc (Jenia), Marion (Jeff), Kaitlyn (Kyle), Laura (Tyler) and Mary (Matt).  Susan also cherished her great nieces and nephews, Isabel and William, Nicholas and Max, Rooney, Cooper and Piper.

Susan was devoted to family values and traditions. She cared about her family and was always there to provide moral support during difficult times. She loved her parents dearly; she was a true daughter. They instilled in her courage, faithfulness, love and understanding. She formed bonds that connected all her siblings and her family will miss her greatly.

Susan spent most of her adult years living and working in Banff, Alberta. There she formed lasting friendships with countless people. She was known in the Bow Valley for many years as Magpie Sue after working for the Magpie and Stump Restaurant as a cook in the early 80’s and later becoming their general manager.  She was also employed at Wild Bill’s, the Grizzly House, Johnny Rays, The Cake Company and Mountain Business Systems.  She worked for a short time at Club Med in St. Lucia.  She was well-known and respected by many in the small Banff Mountain town.

Though Susan loved the mountains, more recently she decided to try something different and in 2016, she moved to Victoria, British Columbia.  After working in some shorter-term employment, she was hired by BC Ferries.  She loved her work there, was highly regarded by staff and admin, became a trainer and kept new hires under her wing.  Folks liked her gregarious nature and said that she was fun.

Susan’s passing is a great shock to all who knew her.  Following her wishes to be cremated, she will be buried in Banff with a Celebration of Life to be held at the Legion on November 19, 2023.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Royal Canadian Legion No. 26 Col. Moore Branch in Banff Alberta.

Condolences may be offered to the family below.

  1. Susan and I worked together for the past five years, and from the day that she walked in for her interview, I knew she was an incredible person, who led with love and laughter. I would look forward to our meetings, often finding ourselves off-topic, wrapped up in memories of ‘the good-ole days’, and whatever that meant for each of us, and her hilarious stories and the excitement that poured out of her when talking about her treasured family and friends.

I miss her a lot, and I think of her often. I always will.

Susan’s spirit will forever shine bright in all of our hearts.

My deepest condolences to you and your family during this difficult time.

Rest in peace, dear Susan. You are so loved <3

  2. I met Susan when she joined BC Ferries and feel incredibly lucky to have known her. It is difficult to find the words to genuinely express how kind, thoughtful, and positive Susan always was. My deepest condolences to her family, who surely know best how she embodied these qualities. She is missed.

  3. Susan will be missed dearly. I thought of her a few days before her passing wondering if I would run into her at work as I only come into the office twice a month at BCF. It was always so nice seeing her smiling face; she was so pleasant to work with and to be around, she was always happy and I loved that about her. My deepest condolences to her family and friends and I wish you all love and strength during this difficult time. Rest in peace Susan.

  4. I worked with Susan at BC Ferries. These last few years I have worked quite closely with her, it was so nice to get to know here. She was such an wonderful person, she always had a smile on her face and was just so lovely to talk to and work with. Her presence is greatly missed at work and I think of her often. Sending my dearest condolences. <3

  5. I met Sue in 1980 when she came on board to run the kitchen at Magpie. We worked together there for years…we became fast friends and inseparable. I am soooo shocked and saddened by her passing. We all are. A great light she was, full of humor and love for everyone around her. ❤️

  6. There is a significant void in our “Island” Banff tribe since Sue’s passing. Although I knew her for years in Banff, we got to know each other better and hung out more in Victoria. I’m going to miss our dinners out, playful dissing of reality show dramas and meaningful conversations at the coffee shop. May her beautiful soul rest easy and in peace.

  7. My husband and I knew Sue for many years in Banff. Always a friendly face and good conversation. She was the glue that brought my friends together. I am truly sorry for your loss.

  8. Truly saddened to hear about Susan passing! I met her in Banff in the early 90’s and thought she was a very nice person! We hadn’t seen each after she moved to the Island but stayed in touch over social media! A big loss!

  9. Sue was a lovely woman who could always put a smile on your face.
Although it’s been many years since I’ve seen her, I still smile whenever I hear her name.
Another great one gone too soon.
    ❤️

  10. My aunt Susan will remain among the kindest souls a person could ever meet. She inherited that from her mom and our nana, who she loved so deeply and whose spirit she always maintained. And she lived a wonderful and fun life – always smiling, always cheerful, always very giving. She made all of our lives a little better, and we already miss her deeply. But somewhere, she’s listening to some very good music. 🙂
