January 23, 1927 – April 6, 2020

We are sad to announce the peaceful passing of our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother at home, surrounded by family, at the age of 93.  Predeceased in 2007 by Joe, her loving husband of 57 years.  Survived by 9 children:  Mary Anne (Allan), Janet (George), Paul (Gina), Theresa (Dennis), Monica (Michael), Mark (Clara), Cecelia (Greg), Joan (Bernie), Michelle (Garry); 19 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.  Also many nieces and nephews.

Mom was proud to be a second generation Victorian and a graduate of Victoria High School.  She was happy and proud to remain in the Fairfield home that she and Dad built in 1950.  Mom loved to laugh, play games and spend time at Shawnigan with her family.  She loved her china painting, crocheting and projects for the family.  For many years she entered her crafts, needlework and baking at the Saanich Fair and won many ribbons for her handiwork.

Much gratitude to the wonderful ladies of Pacific Coast Health Services, especially Caprice & Hilary for all their care and Scrabble games.  Also special thanks to the Island Health homecare workers and nurses, for their support and guidance.

Due to current Covid19 restrictions, there will be a private family Funeral Mass at St. Patrick’s Parish with Fr. William Hann officiating.  Interment will be at Royal Oak Burial Park.  Flowers gratefully declined but if desired donations can be made to Victoria Women’s Transition House Society.  We thank all family and friends for their kindness and support during this time.

Condolences may be offered to the family below.

  1. I remember your mother from our time of visiting while china painting. Once a week we’d all get together and chat and paint and laugh. She was a lovely woman and I know you will have so many warm and happy memories of her. No matter how old your parents are, it is always a difficult time when it is time to say goodbye to them. I am sorry for your loss.

  2. Janet, George and family,

Our sincerest condolences on the passing of your mother.

Let your loving memories of a life well lived console you during the sad time.

    Take care, Al & Karen

  3. To all of the Griffin Family, our deepest sympathies from the the McLellans, especially on behalf of Mom, Helen McLellan. We remember the great times the “Married Couples Club” had each month, playing games and having a relaxing evening without all us kids, and we all got together for the summer picnic at Bamberton. Mom and Dad considered your parents such good friends. That group of friends was their network in times of joy and times of challenges, always there to support each other. To think those friendships started before they all were married and lasted all these years. May it be the love, support and prayers of your friends and family that carries you through this difficult time.
Theresa, hope to be able to give you a hug at St. Pat’s whenever we are able to travel again.

  6. Janet and family i am so sorry to hear of your mother’s passing. Even if you are prepared, the loss of a mother leaves a huge hole in your heart that never truly closes. 7. I have great memories of my Aunt Susie. We had a great relationship – from the first time I visited Victoria she and Uncle Joe (salt of the earth) were just great, made me feel like family whenever I came to visit. She loved to talk about her younger days with my dad, loved the history of the Colberts and Griffins, And her kids were all great, a lot like their parents with excellent senses of humour and fun. I used to call her to chat on the phone fairly often, always cherished having family out in one of the beautiful cities in Canada. So glad that I made the trip out to see her when I heard of her illness about a month ago. It was just like old times, and she was sharp as ever. Jim and I had a fantastic and memorable meal with Theresa, Dennis and other family members, including 2 of the Derks boys – I’m just thankful to have seen Susie for the last time… I loved her a lot and will miss her…. my thanks and warmest condolences to the Griffin family.
