Susan Yet Shue Lui

Surrounded by family and friends, Susan Yet Shue Lui, 71, died peacefully at Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria, BC on November 13, 2021. Susan was born in Taishan, China and travelled with her mother to Vancouver in the late 1950’s to be reunited as a family with her father who had previously immigrated to Canada.

She attended school in the Dunbar and Strathcona neighborhoods and completed high school at Britannia. Susan enrolled in pharmacy school at UBC and landed her first full time job as a community pharmacist within weeks of graduating in 1977. She provided care to patients in Penticton and then Sidney over a 36-year professional career. Susan had a zest for life and her passions included gardening, outdoor activities, running, entertaining, and testing her knowledge watching Jeopardy. She made friends easily and was always keen to try new experiences like taking up golfing when she was 50 and learning how to ride a bicycle at the age of 60.

Susan was devoted throughout her life to her family and is survived by her three younger siblings Gordon (Laura), Harvey (May), and Cynthia (Gregory). She cherished her nieces and nephews Heather, Meghan, Allison, Nicholas, Tamara, Dylan, and Lauren, as well as her cat Cali. She was predeceased by her parents Chow Hon and Sue Kam Lui, and by her beloved partner Robert “Bob” Adams. Her family is deeply grateful to all the friends and health care professionals who supported Susan on her final life’s journey.

Due to the current Covid-19 situation, a Celebration of Life for family and friends originally planned for January will now be held on Saturday, May 7, 2022 at 2PM in the Sequoia Centre at McCall Gardens. Those wishing to join virtually may do so by clicking here.

  1. Susan, I will always remember your laughter and love of nature. I was at the place where I first met you today before I joined the zoom call to celebrate your life. I felt your presence through the small, orange hummingbird parched on the chickory plant. You will be missed.

  2. A heartfelt and wonderful tribute to a special person who touched so many lives and made them better. Her influence on those she touched is a ripple effect that will infinitely spread.

  3. Dear Cindy, Gordon and Harvey,
Thank you for allowing Hugh and I the opportunity to be part of the celebration of life today. It bought back many memories of her time in Penticton.

  4. The passing of Sue, our next door neighbour, was a sorrowful time for us. We only knew her 3 1/2 years when we moved here but she was welcoming and loving from the time we met her. We came to love her very much and will miss her terribly. She always came and visited with us on our patio and was a great source of information about our plants and flowers and we so enjoyed our time with her. She shared our love of God and his son, Jesus, and we often had a worship time with her. Looking forward to when we see her in our next life. John and Gay Pringle

  5. Fondly remembering Susan’s infectious laughter and her ability to bring light to any situation. Susan’s kindness to others and thoughtfulness will always be a lasting memory. My sincere condolences to her family…lost but never forgotten.

  6. Susan was an amazing lady, I loved her dearly. I was fortunate to have met her through our mutual friend Lillian. We only really saw her a few times but I will never forget her bubbly personality. She would light up a room with her beautiful smile, and her laugh. I will never forget when Lillian and Susan would come visit, the endless nights of laughter from everyone. I also remembering her saying was Wakey Wakey make hay while the sun shines. I think it was the funniest thing ever. Occasionally I will say it to my son.
I am sad I wasn’t able to see Susan before she passed away but I will remember her always.
My condolences to the entire family she will be dearly missed❤️

  7. Dear Gordon, Harvey, Cyndi and families,

I will always remember Susan for her infectious laugh, zest for life, and love of family. Susan’s introduction to my first camping experience at Cathedral Lakes is something I’ll never forget. May she rest in peace. My sincere condolences to you all.

  8. To Susan Lui, brother and sister. Sorry your sister Susan has left us. I only saw her once in Victoria . I never realized your parents
were my parents best friends in the same village till she sent me pictures of your parents 60 years ago. We chatted about the olden days. It was big surprise. I thank your parents for helping us during our rough times in the 1960s. I still remember. I tried to meet Susan again but she passed. We all will miss her.
