Tai-Chuan Hu 胡台娟 passed away peacefully on June 28, 2025, in Victoria, British Columbia, in the loving arms of her sister, Shan Hu Dam 胡珊. Her passing came just days after she had arrived in Victoria to visit her sister and family. Though her time was brief, it was filled with love, closeness, and the comfort of being surrounded by those who were dearest to her.
Born on February 9, 1956, in Taipei, Taiwan, Tai-Chuan was the youngest child of Hu Rui Yu 胡瑞玉 and Cheng Liu Fang 程栁芳, originally from Zhejiang, China. She was predeceased by her beloved parents and leaves behind a family who cherished her deeply: one brother 胡川 and his wife 王憲英, three sisters 胡湘、胡珊、胡台媛 and their husbands 彭爭之、譚熾南、彭蔚中, nine nephews and two nieces, along with four grandnephews and eight grandnieces.
Tai-Chuan immigrated to Canada on July 11, 1977, at the age of 21. She was welcomed with open arms by her sister Shan Dam and brother-in- law Xi Nam Dam 譚熾南 who supported her as she began a new chapter in Ottawa.
A remarkable and resilient woman, Tai-Chuan will be fondly remembered for her humour, will, strength—physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual. She possessed exceptional financial management skills, an unshakable desire to learn and strong work ethic, boundless energy and a “positive can-do” attitude. Her deep, unconditional love for her nieces, nephews, and their children was one of the great joys of her life.
Tai-Chuan worked at Statistics Canada for many years, where she also completed training in computer and statistical sciences. After retiring, she continued to live independently, often traveling to visit family in Canada, the United States, and Taiwan—always treasuring the time spent with her loved ones.
Her warmth, generosity, and enduring spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
A Funeral Service will be held from the Sequoia Centre at McCall Gardens, 4665 Falaise Drive, Victoria, BC on Tuesday, July 8th, 2025 at 9:00am, with cremation to follow. I am saddened to hear of Tai’s passing. I worked with her at Statistics Canada and fondly remember her sense of humour and vibrance in the office. My deepest condolences to Tai’s family and loved ones.
Shocked and sorry to hear of the passing of Tai! She was a friendly and vibrant person. Tai was always on the go. She spoke to me about teaching her grandnephew and niece her birth language. Tai always had an interesting story to tell. As a neighbour, my husband and I will miss her.
Sympathies to her family,
Priscilla and Al
We will miss seeing Tai going for her walks for exercise or to go shopping. We will miss our board games (Sequence) with her. We considered her as a friend and not just a nearby neighbour.
