Passed peacefully at his home in Victoria BC with his children at his side. Predeceased by Donna (nee Bernard), his first wife of 42 years, Valerie (nee O’Sullivan) his second wife of 23 years, his parents Gertrude and John, and his brother Jack.  He leaves behind his three children: Brad (Patti), Shari (Scott) and Heather (Darryl); his grandchildren: David (Noel), Doug (Alyssa), Deanna, Sarah (Travis), Amanda (Orlo), Kevin (Rachel), Laura (Reuben), Sebastian (Jess), and Claire (Tyler); his great grandchildren: Oliver, Maggie, McKinley, Owen, Madison, Julia, Ethan and Connor; his step-children: Chris (Beth) and Kathleen (Pierre), and his step-grandchildren: Cassandra, Rebecca, Rachel, Valerie and Madison.

Dave worked as an accountant with Air Canada, retiring in 1984 at the young age of 48.  He moved his family from Winnipeg to Montreal to Mississauga with his job and actively engaged in each community in which he lived. When his children were young, Coach Dave stepped up for baseball, softball, ringette and hockey.  He was an active cheerleader for all other sports and activities that his children and grandchildren participated in. He, himself, enjoyed playing softball, badminton, volleyball, curling and square dancing, but golf was his real passion.  For mental stimulation, Dave enjoyed bridge and pretty much any card or board game into which he was invited to play. While visiting with his grandchildren, epic Hand and Foot card games would erupt at the nearest table that would accommodate them all. He has passed his love for games to all his grandchildren.

At Dave’s request, there will not be a funeral service.  He will be put to rest in a private family ceremony.

Condolences may be offered to the family below.

  • BEVERLY JONES

Dearest Cousins 🙂 Uncle Dave was special to me…I always enjoyed my conversations and appreciated his perspective as we debated a number of topics over the decades. I loved that he and Val found each other and shared a lovely supportive relationship. We can only wish for our parents to have that comfort, which I believe he did.
My heart goes out to you all, Brad, Shari and Heather and your families, as you manage the future without him, but hold strong to the memories. Bev & Ev Jones

  • George Fisk

We were very sorry about the passing of Dave. He was our close friend for many years, and a frequent dinner companion. He was a fearsome opponent at bridge due to his excellent memory and ability to play without sorting his hand. He contributed to our strata in many ways, from running a register of parking stalls to helping with the budgeting.

    We will miss him greatly.

Dear Brad, Sheri and Heather and the rest of the large Mavins clan. You have our sympathy. To know Dave was to love him, quirks and all. Our dinner dates were always filled with lively conversation and real friendship. We will miss him. We are so glad that Dave had his family close by in his last days. We are sure it meant everything to him. You three are good children. You have our sincere condolences. Fond regards, Linda and John Edgell

  • Janice and John

Dave and Val were much valued as friends and neighbors. We will miss them greatly. Dave gave wise counsel and was super competitive when playing any board game or other card game. It was wonderful that family was able to spend so much time with him last summer and in recent months. Take care Brad, Shari and Heather!
