October 2, 1928 – December 22, 2011

With great sadness, we announce the passing of Bud, after a short battle with pneumonia. Bud passed away at Saanich Peninsula Hospital, Extended Care Unit 2, surrounded by his family. Predeceased by his parents, Christopher and Sally and his wife, Mary. Survived by his daughter, Susan Abbott and son-in-law, Colin Pain. He was born in the Lake District of England, in the Village of Askham. After training as a radio operator in Wales, he served with the Palestine Police. He moved to Bermuda in the early 1950’s to set up the first radio system for the police. He met and married Lois Morran in Bermuda. After daughter Susan was born, they moved to Winnipeg in the fall of 1952. Bud worked as a policeman for the Winnipeg Police for 33 years, retiring in 1986. He and his wife, Mary moved to Falcon Beach and then to Sidney, BC in 1989 and shortly after to Saanichton BC. Bud was an active Ham Radio Operator throughout his life and remained in touch with his many “Ham” friends until his death. He spent most of his time on-line, over the past few years, talking with friends from around the world via Skype. A detective at heart, he had a keen memory for detail and continued to share many stories with family, friends and careworkers. Dogs always had a soft spot in his heart. Susan and Colin wish to thank the staff of the Saanich Peninsula Hospital for their care over the last few years, expecially the staff of Extended Care Unit 2 over the last year. A special thanks to Louise and Heather for your kindness and friendship.

At Bud’s request there will be no service. His ashes will be returned to England and interred at St. Martins Church in the Martindale Valley, close to his parents. ln lieu of flowers, donations can be made to your favourite charity. Condolences may be offered to the family below.

    Dear Susan,
I just heard about your father having served in the Bermuda Police Force from another former officer, Rod Fowkes, who met your father several times while Rod was visiting his own parents in hospital. Bud and Rod shared stories about their time serving in the BPF. Rod just discovered that I run a website for the Bermuda Ex-Police Association and he sent me a copy of your fathers obituary with a suggestion that I publish it in our Hall of Fame section (dedicated to former BPF officers who are no longer with us). I would like to make contact with you about a brief article about your father I just published on our website, and also to request a photo of him, if it exists, in Bermuda Police uniform. I can be contacted at this email address or at info@expobermuda.com I look forward to hearing from you. Roger Sherratt.

    Dear Susan and family,
I heard, at work, of your Dad’s passing and, subsequently, came across the announcement in the newspaper. I would like to pass on my sincere, heartfelt condolences at this emotionally challenging time. Susan, we’re all thinking of you at work and wish you well. Hopefully, time and the support of family and friends will heal the pain and sorrow brought on by the passing of your dear Father.

    Dear Susan,

I saw this in the newspaper today and was hoping there would be a way to get in touch with you.

I have great memories of our friendship and I remember your dad clearly. Being the detective that he was, I always felt he knew what was up and yet he chose to never make me feel uncomfortable.

I know he was a good man and I have respect for what he represents in a world, that today, needs more men like him.

My thoughts go out to you at this time.

    Your old pal,

    Brad Enns
