May 29, 1921 – June 6, 2012

Today, we celebrate the life and mourn the passing of our father and grandfather, Tom Bartie.  Tom’s life was one of service to his church and community, his country and his family. Tom is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Dan and Tracey Bartie (NS); his daughter, Lynda Bartie (BC) and his grandchildren, Abbey and Nate Bartie, for whom the sun never set in his eyes. Tom was born in Buckhaven, Scotland in 1921 to William and Margaret Bartie and travelled by steamship to Canada in 1929. He volunteered for the Royal Canadian Air Force at age 19 during World War II, as a flight Engineer with 162 Squadron, flying anti-submarine sorties in PBY Canso’s out of Iceland and Scotland over the North Atlantic. Upon his return to Toronto after the war, he met and married the love of his life Madelyn in 1946, with whom he remained married for 50 years until her passing in 1996. Tom and Madelyn raised two wonderful kids, Lynda and Dan. In his golden years Tom took great delight in his two grandchildren, Abbey and Nate. Tom worked loyally for Direct Factory Sales Ltd. of Toronto for a total of 49 years, taking retirement in 1987 and moving to Victoria, BC to play the links daily. Tom was deeply involved with and served on the Kirk Sessions of both Armour Heights Presbyterian Church in Toronto, ON and St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Victoria, BC for many wonderful years.

Tom passed away peacefully at home in New Minas, NS on the morning of June 6, 2012.
