May 13, 1931 – October 9, 2013
It is with deep sadness our family announces the passing of Wally MacKay. Wally was predeceased by his parents, Lawrence and Lillian MacKay of Victoria. He is survived by his loving wife, Mildred J. Davy (Milly) of 60 years; his daughter Jeune Scoffil (Joe); his two granddaughters, Danielle J. Dodds (Patrick) and Alexandria D. Scoffil; and great-grandson, Garrison, all of Florida; and his sister Lawrene Hughes (Gil).
Wally had a long distinguished career with The Royal Bank of Canada starting in 1950 in Victoria. After 20 years, holding positions of Branch Inspector, Accountant, Assistant Manager, Senior Inspector B.C. and Branch Manager of Douglas and Pandora, he was then transferred to the Head Office in Montreal as Assistant Supervisor of Lending (Quebec District). He also held positions of Manager and Supervisor of the St. John’s, New Brunswick Branches. Other positions were District Manager of Retail Banking of the Atlantic Provinces in Halifax, Nova Scotia and Assistant General Manager of South Alberta.
In 1979, his first international appointment was London, England as Vice President of Middle East and Africa as well as Vice President of Global Energy and Minerals. Both positions required extensive travel through Europe, Scandinavia, Arab States and Africa.
In 1982, Wally returned to the Head Office in Montreal as Senior Vice President of Lending Commercial Banking National Accounts and, in 1984, Wally held the position of Deputy Managing Director of the National Mutual Royal Bank in Melbourne, Australia. Wally’s final position in 1987 was Senior Vice President of Lending/Risk Management in the Head Office in Toronto.
Wally and Milly retired home to Victoria in 1989. They summered in Bowen Island with family for eight years. Throughout his life, he enjoyed scholarly pursuits and was an avid reader of history and biography. Wally was ever grateful for the support he received from his wife and daughter in furthering his career. He will be greatly missed, but not forgotten.
A memorial service to honour his life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated to the Parkinson’s Society of B.C., #600 – 890 Pender Street, Vancouver, B.C. V6C 1J9.
Condolences may be offered to the family below.

Antonio Pedro Dear Milly,
I am so sorry to read of Wally’s death in this morning’s obituaries.
Wally was such a great man, so cool and calm, very direct and to the point, which I admired and respected very much.
I know he was very devoted to you and his children and will be sadly missed by those who knew him.
We just lost my father to cancer this week and buried him yesterday and I feel for you and your family at this difficult time.
Just keep positive and remember all the good times you both shared.
If there is anything you and your family need, do not hesitate to contact me.
Wally and my father Armando’s generation were just in a class of their own.
Take care.
Tony Pedro and family.

Bonnie & Doug Henley Dear Milly,
Doug and I are so sorry to learn of Wally’s death.
Doug and Wally met at Victoria High School and later both had careers at The Royal Bank.
When we moved back to Victoria in 1989, I met Wally and the 4 of us became great friends.
We will miss Wally’s keen mind and good spirits in spite of his many health challenges over the years.
