Wil passed away peacefully on February 23, 2025, after a brief illness. He had battled dementia for many years. Predeceased by his sister June and brother Ron, he is lovingly remembered by his ex-wife Lila, sons Justin (Donna) and Austin (Liz), daughter Cara (David), grandchildren Tat and Tasha, brother Ray, half-siblings Pam (Bob), Barry (Suzanne), and Terry (Mary), and many extended family members and friends.
Born and raised in Victoria, Wil attended George Jay, Central, Vic High, and UVic. He trained as a pilot in the Royal Canadian Air Force, later working as an investor, painter, and federal electrical draftsman. Despite hardships—including losing his father at a young age—Wil found humour in life’s quirks. He loved music, dancing, and sports, excelling in cross-country running, tennis, and ping pong.
Wil was known for his big smile, loud laugh, and generous heart. He always welcomed friends, family and even people he didn’t know to a meal at his favorite restaurant. He found joy in poetry (“She Walks in Beauty”), singing off-key to his favorite songs (“Moon River”, “Autumn Leaves”, and “It’s Now or Never”), and reminiscing about his happiest memories. Even as he lost his hearing, he adapted with lip-reading and remained as charming as ever.
He was a keen driver and was famous for going on family road trips. Travelling to Washington State, Oregon, California and Florida. His moniker with close family was “Wrong Way Jay”. He travelled to Poland later in life and learned about the culture there too.
He will be deeply missed. Special thanks to the staff at Glengarry and The Heights at Mt. View for their care.
A Celebration of Life will be held in the Sequoia Centre at McCall Gardens, 4665 Falaise Drive, Victoria, BC on Saturday, June 28th, 2025 at 2:00 PM with desserts to follow in honor of Wil’s sweet tooth.
