With sadness, we announce the passing of William Alexander Porter at Royal Jubilee Hospital on May 26, 2010. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Kathryn (Deen); three children, John (Jean), Susan (Brian), David (Cynthia) and four grandchildren, Shannon, Robert, Seamus and Angus. Alex was born in Edmonton on January 3, 1924 to Catherine (Munro) and William John Porter. He spent his youth in Vancouver, Anyox and Victoria, attending Sir James Douglas Elementary, Victoria High School and Victoria College. After serving in the Air Force, Alex then enrolled at UBC, graduating in 1949 (BSc Forestry). He then attended the University of Wisconsin where he met the woman who became his lifetime companion. He was employed by the Federal Government in Forest Pathology, then entered the education field and taught high school science in Victoria. He was an avid yachtsman and enjoyed many summers cruising the BC Coast. For over thirty years, he was a member of Capital City Yacht Club. He also belonged to the Victoria Cruising Club and Council of BC Yacht Clubs. Many thanks to the staff at RJH for their care and support.

A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, June 2, 2010 at 2:30 pm at the Capital City Yacht Club, 10630 Blue Heron Road in Sidney, BC. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Marine Parks Forever Society or a charity of choice. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.mccallbros.com.

Dear Kay and family, I will forever remember the Memorial Service for Alex and all the many kind words and tributes that were given. I know that Alex would be very pleased.
You are all in my prayers during this time.
Alex was such a great help for me when my mom and dad both passed away. I will be forever grateful for all the help and advice that he gave me during that time of my life. I am so pleased to have known him. He was like a father to me in many ways, for which I will always be greatful.
He was a wonderful man, and one that you can all be well proud of.
    Thank you….
