May 25, 1918 – September 28, 2013
Our father passed away peacefully on September 28, 2013 at the Royal Jubilee Hospital. Dad had a long and happy life nurturing and caring for the people in his parishes. He leaves behind his son Barry (Mignonne); daughter Nancy; 5 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren.
He was born in North Battleford, Saskatchewan and was the sixth of eight children. Dad spent his childhood playing and going to school in Northern Saskatchewan. He received his calling and entered Emmanual Ministeral College in 1938. Upon graduation as a Deacon he was sent to the Little Pine Native Reservation and other outlying parishes.
Dad was Priested on April 11, 1942, and married our mother a year later. With Mom by his side he started his ministry which was to last for 71 years. His first two parishes were Paynton and Radison in Saskatchewan. In 1944 he was asked to come to the Diocese of BC to St. John’s Ladysmith as their new Minister. From Ladysmith dad moved to St. Albans, Victoria, where he raised funds to build a new church hall. In 1957 he was asked to move to Duncan to assume duties for three parishes, St. Peters Quamichan, St. Andrews, Cowichan Station and also to hold services in a little hall at Maple Bay. Dad was at Duncan for 9 years and moved back to Victoria to St. Michaels and All Angels on West Saanich Road. Settling in was not to be and after a short 5 years in this parish he accepted what would be his last parish at St. Matthias on Richmond Road. Dad retired in 1983 from St. Matthias and went to work at Christ Church Cathedral where he would actively remain for the next 31 years.
Dad led an active and full life, filled with love, humor, and laughter. He always had an easy smile accompanied with a twinkle in his eye and a wink coming in close second. Dad touched many lives in his Vocation as a Minister and through this ministry, which continued right up to his death, made many friends and was a friend to countless more.
He had a beautiful tenor voice and could be heard lending his voice to the Church Choirs and Linden Singers, as well as performing with the Barber Shoppers for many years. He was an active member of the Mt. Newton Masonic Lodge and he was the Padre for the St. John’s Ambulance.
In his free time he could be found in the garden nurturing his Dahlia’s and Sweet Peas. He enjoyed both lawn bowling and alley bowling. Dad loved his sports; hockey, football, curling, golf and could often be found engrossed in the game that he was watching as well as adding his own colorful interpretation and commentary of the event.
Dad was an unassuming and modest person and he would have been overwhelmed to see the out pouring of love that has been shown to his family.
Both Barry and I are grateful for his ministry and for the strength of family that he has instilled in both of us. We will more than miss him, but we are strengthened to know that we will see him again in a far better place.
Thank you all for your support.
Ted’s funeral will be held at Christ Church Cathedral, Victoria BC, at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 12, 2013. Our family would like to thank Dr. Cuthbert, Dr. Stigant, Dr. Peppler, Dr. Cavers and the nursing staff on the 8th floor of the Royal Jubilee Hospital for the kindness and care given to our Father. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Dad’s name to Christ Church Cathedral or a charity of your choice.

On behalf of the Victoria Dahlia Society, the members will always have fond memories of Ted, and his participation in the club, of which he was a member since 1982. We loved his sense of humour, and were honored to have his blessings at any club dinners that he attended. He will be missed very much!

Dear Greenhalgh Family,
Shirley and I would like to express our sympathy for the passing of our dear friend, Ted. Ted made an outstanding contribution to the Christ Church Family, and his community; and he will be sorely missed.
We met Ted at Christ Church Cathedral, where he sat two pews back, regaling us with his witty repartee.
Ted modeled the very essence of Christianity, with a kindness, generosity and sense of humour that made us the lucky recipients of a life well-lived.
May God bless him; and you all.
Sincerely,
Shirley and Alan Finley
So many memories and so much thankfulness to have known him and Isobel. Our one memory comes from our daughter, Rena, who had moved to Saskatchewan and at one point was very ill in a Saskatoon hospital but we were unaware of the details. Ted was going to Saskatoon as a brother in law had died overseas and he was going to see his sister. I mentioned about Rena and not knowing what was going on. He reported, when he returned, he had seen her and how glad she was to see him. She later said she saw ‘the shoes’ under the curtain around the bed and heard ‘the voice’ and could scarcely believe it was Ted. She was so very grateful for his visit. He looked at picture of her two boys on her table and said, now, Rena, you must pull through for those boys. He said a prayer with her and gave words of encouragement. Many years later when she was here on a visit, we went past Stannard Avenue when she saw him and said ‘stop the car’ got out and ran over to him. Good hugs all around and tears. She will never forget him and nor will we!
Just another story to add to all the others who were blessed by this amazing man.
Blessings, Sylvia
Dear Barry and Nancy, and your families. Uncle Ted will truly be missed. The visits were few but the phone chats were plentiful. Uncle Ted always put a little spark into my day. I am so blessed to have had such beautiful Godparents; now there will be an emptiness in my life.
My thoughts and prayers are with you.
Love from your cousin Lorna
A good friend, a respected colleague, a faithful priest. May the Lord bring him to a glorious resurrection at the Last Day.
So sorry to hear of your father/grandfather/great grandfather’s passing.
What a wonderful person he was & we feel so fortunate to have known him. We know he will be greatly missed.
Our thoughts & prayers are with you.
Take care.

Dear Barry and Nancy, We are certainly going to miss “Uncle Ted” as we do Auntie Isabel. The wonderful times we shared growing up and visiting over the years. Having married our parents, and making sure their wedding was just before one of a wealthier couple, who filled the church with flowers just before our parents ceremony, assured our Mom she would have plenty of flowers at hers! They also had a dinner at their place for everyone afterward. They continued to be a large part of our lives. Ted insisted Ferd and I attend four “marriage” classes prior to marrying. Ferd wasn’t impressed after the first one,but by the forth they were “toasting” each other! The beginning of a long and happy friendship. We send you and your families our condolences and will remember both your parents with warmth, affection and of course laughter. Take care ,Love Ferd and Marj Kallstrom
In 1957 Reverend (as he was then)? married Ben and I in Nanaimo, B.C. on September 9th. Ben was 22 and I was 18 years of age.
We lived in Campbell River and were having some difficulties with my parents regarding the wedding.
We decided to go to Nanaimo with a very dear friend Una Box who was like a mother to me. She had a sister (think her name was Marg) who lived in Nanaimo and belonged to St. Paul’s Anglican church where G.H. Greenhalgh was the reverend at the time.
Marg made the arrangements for the wedding. We first had to have an interview with Reverend Greehaugh before our service. He was so nice and told us many things about being married and about the church.
Marg’s daughter stood up for us so there were 5 of us..
He was so nice to both of us and made us feel we were doing the right thing under the circumstances. We then went to Marg’s home where we had a tea party in her garden.
Ben and I have been members of the Anglican church for many years.
As I send this I am looking at our Marriage Certificate as signed by G.H. Greenhalgh.
We have never regretted eloping and will celebrate our 57th wedding anniversary in September, 2013.
