In 1974, Wilbur took in my new wife and I when we moved to Vancouver. He was so charming, literally mesmerized my wife who talked about him for years afterwards. Wilbur helped us find an incredible home to rent and he visited often during our sojourn in the city. I am saddened to learn that such a magnificent man has left this world. I hope your next journey is amazing.

Wilbur was indeed a character. Although I knew him for only a brief time, I valued that friendship. I also knew Wilbur’s two constant friends “Jonathan and Jennifer”, two seagulls who were daily visitors on Wilbur’s balcony. I have a photo of them and think of Wilbur and these two friends often. I do not know if the story is true or not, but I like to think that it is: Wilbur is the only person I know who got through to the Queen on her private line. Consequently there were ramifications, but I forget what those were. I memorable character he was!

On behalf of my mom, Gene, and my brother, Art Aitkens (now both passed away), who were friends of Wilbur’s for many years, I send my condolences to Wilbur’s family. He was a character and marched to his own drummer, but he was always interested and interesting. He was a good friend to my brother Art, who didn’t have many friends.

    Best wishes,
    Fran Aitkens
