Barbara Schultz, 56, passed away on Sunday, March 10, 2019 surrounded by her family. After battling cancer for 8 months, she is now at peace eternally. Born on February 1, 1963 in New Westminster to Donald and Irene Fraser, Barbara completed grade school in Burnaby and graduated in pharmacy from UBC in 1987. She married Naval Officer, Michael Schultz, in 1990 and moved to Halifax where her four boys were born. She worked as a community pharmacist in Halifax and then in Victoria after the family was posted here in 1999. Barbara was known for always doing what was right and pursuing justice, as she constantly pushed boundaries to improve the quality of education and life for persons with disabilities. She was never satisfied until things were fair, and “fair does not always mean equal.” She advocated passionately for causes close to her heart which included a stint as the President of the Community Living Victoria Board of Directors. Barbara will be dearly missed for her caring nature, thoughtful intelligence, and dry sense of humour (which paired perfectly with her iconic laugh).
She is survived by her loving husband, Michael and their sons, Konrad, Trevor, Bradley and Matthew; as well as her mother, Irene; and her siblings, Elaine, Douglas, Gordon and Grant. Many other family and friends will mourn her loss in Canada and the United States.
Many thanks for the stellar care received at the Victoria Cancer Clinic, RJH Oncology Ward and Victoria Hospice.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Saanich Baptist Church, 4347 Wilkinson Road, at 2:00 pm on Friday, March 29th, 2019.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Barbara’s memory to Community Living Victoria or Victoria Hospice.
Condolences may be offered to the family below.

Barb was the person who brought me to the CLV board after we met at an AGM. I knew I had met her before then realized Brad and my son Zac had played basketball together at Claremont. I remember feeling Barb was a special person after the first time we met in the gym so it seemed like fate when we met again at CLV. Although I only knew her for a brief time I feel blessed that I did and her commitment to helping others will continue to inspire so many of us. How proud you must be…I am thinking of you all.
dear Michael and family……our remembrances of Barb started when she was in grade 5 and we were so honoured to have her continue in our class for the grade 6 and 7 years also. SHe was a wonderful,student…..so loved teaching her….we also so appreciated her mom Irene coming in to,help out in the classroom. we then have fond memories of your wedding and occasionally heAring how you were doing. THen about 15..???…years ago I was teaching at a conference in Victoria and Barb came up and said …Mrs, Laird..and from there a new friendship began. I so looked forward to our visits when I was teaching over there or when you came to Children’s……and was sad when Matthew aged out of that system and I wouldn’t see you on a regular basis. MRs,Shutek always would get an update on your lives after a visit. WE were both so glad to come to Victoria that last week, to share our blssings with Barb and to spend time with you……..we both so wish you peace….and send our love and prayers to all the family. we will be thinking about you on Saturday….Barbara Laird and Joanne Shutek.
Dear Mike, Konrad, Trevor, Bradley and Matthew,
Barb was such a spark of light and life. Her rich laugh was infectious and just hearing it would put such a smile on my face. I admired her passion and commitment to her family and anything she believed in. She had such grace, and even that last time we saw her in hospital such and amazing sense of humour. I will miss her very much. And my heart and warmest thoughts go out to all of you right now. Sincerely, Val
Dearest Mike and your amazing sons,
My heart is broken at the news of Barb’s untimely passing.
I only volunteered with Barb for a few years in the PACs, but all I can say is that I will never forget her hardy laugh, her delicious homemade gingerbread cookies, her sharp mind and her perfect grammar. Barb was a force with which to be reckoned and for all the good reasons. She gave so much to her community and cared deeply for her causes, justice and respect for all. She also had an amazing humility and generosity towards all the people she encountered.
She will be missed by so many and the world is less kind and caring place now.
My deepest condolences to your family and may you find solace in your community and faith.
Tragic that is the only word that describes Barb’s death. Her son Konrad married our granddaughter Zara December 29th, 2018. She was so determined to make that wedding and do all the things she wanted to on that day. And she did. Sheer grit and determination. What a lady! Her thoughtfulness and kindness was truly outstanding. This was a very special lady whose warmth and humour will never be forgotten. We were privileged to know her and share camping weekends, Christmas Eve and other family celebrations with her. Our sincere condolences to all her family and friends. Tragic.
Our Condolences to Mike, the boys and the family. Barb was such a great neighbour, we always enjoyed the conversations and the interesting insights she had about families and life. She will be missed dearly, our thoughts are with all of you.

My deepest condolences to Mike, Konrad, Trevor, Bradley and Matthew on the passing of your beautiful wife and mother. I have many fond memories of Barb while playing hockey together at UBC, stressing over final exams, and later in Halifax as Barb and Mike became parents four times in quick succession to you four boys lucky enough to have been blessed with such a terrific Mom. I recall many outings together to parks, local attractions and restaurants while Barb juggled motherhood, work and household chores often while Mike was away and yet she never complained and always kept her sense of humor throughout it all. Barb is now at peace but you can be sure she will be watching down over you all as you lean on each other for support in the coming months and years. The world became a better place with Barb in it; I feel privileged to have known her. May she Rest In Peace.
I did not have the pleasure of knowing Barb intimately having only met her on a few occasions in Sydney, but she raised a wonderful, smart & (constantly) amusing son in Trevor who always spoke so highly of his Mum, and that is a testament to what an incredible woman & Mum she was. My love is with all of you at this tough time & rejoicing Barb is now healed & whole with her Heavenly Father. Love, Eva
