It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Lucretia van den Berg on January 23rd, 2025 at the age of 72. Lucretia was a distinguished and highly regarded physician whose contributions to medicine, the field of endocrinology, and compassionate care touched countless lives. She was born in England in 1952 to South African parents, and moved to Rustenburg S.A., in 1961, where she received her medical education at the University of Pretoria S.A., graduating in 1974. Lucretia immigrated to Canada in 1976, where she pursued a residency in Endocrinology and Metabolism in both Toronto and Edmonton. In 1983, Lucretia established a private Practice in Edmonton specialising in Endocrinology which she later moved to Victoria in 1992. Lucretia is predeceased by her late partner, Dr. Jerry Tenenbaum. She is survived by her son, Tyler Overton-Paszek in Victoria, B.C., her sister, Dawn Rossiter in Cape Town, S.A., and the extended Steenekamp family in South Africa.

  1. My condolences to the family. I was one of Dr. van den Berg’s long standing patients which we always used to commiserate about & share a chuckle. She was the best Dr. and I always knew I was very well looked after.
    Such a loss……

  2. I admired her as a colleague and valued her as a friend

  3. Tyler, I’m very sorry for your loss.

I knew Lucretia for many years and had great respect and fondness for her. Our paths first crossed because we were both working with the Trans community in the early 1990s. Lucretia was a compassionate pioneer. For many years, she was the only endocrinologist in Victoria who served the needs of the Trans community. She was an excellent doctor who treated her Trans patients with kindness and respect, which was something that not many doctors did back then.

I hope that Lucretia has found Jerry again and that they are enjoying another life together.

  4. My condolences to Dr. van den Berg’s family, friends and medical colleagues she treasured. She is a great loss to our community. She was dedicated, kind and caring to her patients and one of the first to start a women’s health clinic in her practice. I will miss her not only as being my physician for some years but most important as being a wonderful human being! -Pat Taylor
