Henry (Hank) Schaumburg passed away peacefully, after a brief illness, at home with his family at his side. He was born in Kuestrin, Germany and emigrated to Canada in 1952 with his parents, Helene and William Schaumburg.
He graduated in 1962 from the Royal Military College in Kingston, Ontario with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He later earned a Master’s Degree at the USN Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. He was a member of the Society of Professional Engineers.
He served 35 years in the Royal Canadian Navy and enjoyed the challenges of a variety of positions including his role as Commanding Officer of the Ship Repair Unit in Esquimalt from 1986-1989. This was followed by a senior appointment as manager of a NATO anti air warfare project in Washington, DC. He retired in 1993 and after 3 years spent sailing in the Caribbean, moved to Victoria. His retirement years were filled with sailing, trawlering, renovating and enjoying his involvement in many creative projects. Time spent at his beloved Buck Lake, Ontario cottage was treasured.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 54 years, Elaine; two daughters, Karen (Kim) Dodds and Susan (Michael) Leeder. He was a proud and much loved GPapa to 6 grandchildren, Erin, Courtney, Sarah, Matthew, Ryan and William.
The family would like to thank Victoria Hospice for their compassionate support. If desired, donations in his memory are requested to Victoria Hospice or the charity of your choice.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Royal Victoria Yacht Club on Friday, May 12, 2017 from 2:00 pm to 4:30 pm.

Dear Elaine and Family
Our sincere condolences for your loss of Henry. He was a wonderful person and great CO SRU(P) and later in Washington a good friend as well. Maureen and I particularly remembered the great times we all had sailing on the Chesapeake Bay.
Henry is already missed.
Elaine: I have sent my condolences via email. I echo the sentiments of our mates, as stated above. Betty & I will also be away on the 12th of May – but we will remember you and yours on Henry’s special day from afar.
Loving regards 5554 Les East
Elaine and Family;
My sincere condolences on your loss. Hank was one of the almost extinct 4th year Electrical Engineers, my CSL, and an usher at my wedding the day following graduation. We will all miss him
Dear Elaine,
I will never forget the wonderful years shared with Hank.
Elaine, we will be away on May 12 so will miss the gathering. We wish you the very best in your grief and recovery.
As Kahlil Gibran told us, the depth of our sorrow is a measure of the joy that we knew.
Elaine
Sincere condolences on the sudden loss of your beloved husband Henry. We served as “lifers” in the military, as I also retired in 93. He will be missed by his classmates.
Hank and I go back a long way. We were classmates at RMC, not only by year, but also by faculty. We trained together as Weapons Officers in the Navy, which gave many opportunities for lunchtime bridge games. He was an usher at my wedding to Pat while on the Seventh Weapons Officer Course. Eventually, Hank went into the engineering side of the Navy while I chose to remain on the upper deck, but we still saw each other at RMC Class reunions. I will always remember Hank for his friendly smile and his love of the sea. To Elaine, Pat and I send our deepest condolences. Hank was a great friend and he will be missed.
Dear Elaine and family – there are no words to adequately express the sorrow I feel for you and with you. My prayers are sent your way. Henry leaves so many happy Church Mouse memories! He will never be forgotten. Sincerely Liz Laugharne.
Elaine and family,
Our thoughts and prayers are with you. We will really miss Henry at the lake. It was always a joy for us to paddle by your cottage and have a chat. We loved hearing about all your boating adventures and travels. Henry was a wonderful person and was truly blessed to experience such joy in his life.
Dear Elaine,
I am sorry that I did not send a note to Hank. Please accept my sincere condolences and those of the Old Brigade of Ex-Cadets. You may recall the last time we met, at Smees’ cottage (my chair collapsed under me). Hank and I lived in side-by-side cabins at RMC, and I look back on that final year at the College with many fond memories.
Very sincerely,
Gerry Stowe
