Henry (Hank) Schaumburg passed away peacefully, after a brief illness, at home with his family at his side. He was born in Kuestrin, Germany and emigrated to Canada in 1952 with his parents, Helene and William Schaumburg.
He graduated in 1962 from the Royal Military College in Kingston, Ontario with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He later earned a Master’s Degree at the USN Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. He was a member of the Society of Professional Engineers.
He served 35 years in the Royal Canadian Navy and enjoyed the challenges of a variety of positions including his role as Commanding Officer of the Ship Repair Unit in Esquimalt from 1986-1989. This was followed by a senior appointment as manager of a NATO anti air warfare project in Washington, DC. He retired in 1993 and after 3 years spent sailing in the Caribbean, moved to Victoria. His retirement years were filled with sailing, trawlering, renovating and enjoying his involvement in many creative projects. Time spent at his beloved Buck Lake, Ontario cottage was treasured.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 54 years, Elaine; two daughters, Karen (Kim) Dodds and Susan (Michael) Leeder. He was a proud and much loved GPapa to 6 grandchildren, Erin, Courtney, Sarah, Matthew, Ryan and William.
The family would like to thank Victoria Hospice for their compassionate support. If desired, donations in his memory are requested to Victoria Hospice or the charity of your choice.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Royal Victoria Yacht Club on Friday, May 12, 2017 from 2:00 pm to 4:30 pm.

Elaine,
My sincere condolences on your loss.
I have fond memories of working for Henry just after he started at SRU(P). He was probably one of the nicest, kindest & most sincere officers I have ever worked for.
My thoughts & prayers are with you & your family.
Sincerely
Kathy Carter
Dear Elaine, Karen and Susan — I am so sorry to learn of Hank’s death. Our families met in Monterey when Hank and Ian were at the US Navy Postgraduate School. We have many fond memories of those days I will always remember Hank’s lovely smile and his kindness. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this sad time. With deepest sympathy, Mavis MacMillan

Elaine and family.
My sincere condolences for your sudden loss of your beloved husband Henry.
I can remember the wonderful times we had when we both lived in the Monteray/Carmel area
while earning our Masters Degrees at the USN Postgraduate School. Although our career paths were quite different, I always enjoyed the times when we did meet. He was a great friend and you two were a great couple.
Dear Elaine,
Although Henry and I seldom saw each other after the years at RMC, I have indelible memories of him during those College years as a warm, friendly, happy guy whose company I always enjoyed. After RMC, it was always great to see and chat with him at reunions.
Please accept my sincere condolences on your loss.

Dear Elaine,
We are heartbroken to lose such a wonderful friend as Henry, fellow classmate & Kingstonian of yore. We have so many memories of both young days and being together at the last RMC Reunions. You had a true soulmate in your fine husband and we will always remember him.
Our love and condolences to you from Libby & Eden Cloutier.
Elaine: I was very shocked and saddened by the news regarding Hank. I remember our times together on the West Coast when I was Commander Training Group Pacific. He was a true gentleman, a fine naval officer and a leader of exceptional character. If Terry were still with us, she would share in my expression of our deepest condolences.
Regards
Tony Goode
Elaine and family,
Peggy and I are saddened to hear of Hank’s illness and passing. Our last visit was a luncheon in Victoria last February which we enjoyed very much. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you at this difficult time.

Dear Elaine,
Henry and I spent a lot of time together as RMC cadets and as young officers. Days I shall forever treasure. It is such a sad thing that he is gone. A fine, fine gentleman. And you two as a couple were so perfect. See you in Victoria. Much love and sympathy, Dennis
Dear Elaine I was so saddened to read of your Henry’s death. He sounded like such a gentleman and you both seemed so happy together. I hope you get comfort from your family and your wonderful memories of happy times together.

Please accept my condolences on the passing of Henry. You don’t know me but I was fortunate enough to be Hank (as he introduced himself to me) when he was the Commanding Officer of Ship Repair. He was the nicest, kindness man I ever met. Several times I almost spilled his morning coffee all over his nice white uniform. He would get back at me by asking if he needed to wear his raincoat if he was going to sit near me. I enjoyed working for him so much during his time at Ship Repair.
My thoughts and prayers are with you and the girls as this most difficult time. May he Rest in Peace
