John Falkins

July 20, 1961 – April 20, 2023

July 20, 1961 – April 20, 2023

John passed away suddenly and peacefully with his family at his side. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Judy (Kappel), children Brent (Chloe), Hayley Warren (Todd), grandchildren Luna, Sasha, Emmett, Brooks, brother David (Brenda) and sister Debbie Wilder (Dan).

John lived in Oak Bay since he was 5 years old. He was passionate about his neighbourhood and community. He helped found Oak Bay Alumni and was the president for the first 15 years. John helped the alumni fundraise for scholarships, a grand piano and was currently helping to acquire a new Track and Field facility.

John had been retired for 5 years and enjoyed each day. He loved gardening, pickleball, committees, traveling (bicycle tours), and most of all, playing with his young grandchildren.

John will be remembered for his smile, dry humour, eclectic music choices, parking rules, his lawn, and above all, his crazy love for his wife and family.

A Celebration of John’s Life will occur in July.

Condolences may be offered to the family below.

  2. Bevin and I are still in shock and sorrow. As work colleagues with Judy, I first met John through his time with Xerox where he was instrumental in improving every copy room in the District with the sale of the first digital photocopiers. His kindness, humour and patience throughout our negotiations was always his biggest asset. His dedication to Oak Bay High staff and students extended into his creation of the Alumni group, which he selflessly led for so many years, fundraising and organizing events until his sudden passing. John was a wonderful and supportive friend to many and our BBQ’s and weekend visits will be so missed. Judy, you are in our hearts. Call when you need anything please.

  3. I am so sorry to hear this. I remember babysitting for Brent and Hayley when I was a student at Oak Bay High in the early 90s. John was a kind and devoted family man. Deep condolences to Mrs. Falkins and the rest of the family

  4. Judy, Kids, Dave, Debbie, …What can I say? It was so good to touch base with John & Judy after so many years. John looked so fit, after his brief spell of impersonating Mike, but I won’t go into that. Our paths go back a long, long time, but have never been a galaxy far, far away. He was so very proud of his family. I have been a fan of his neighborliness, his gardening, and his community involvement. All we can say is “F***!” We are still in shock and we miss him dearly. We will try to join you in July.

Doreen is an Oak Bay alumnus and through her I learned that John was organizing fundraising for the repair of the Oak Bay Track. A huge task and I hope John’s work will be carried on.
