June Ann Nykamp (nee Gibson)

NYKAMP, JUNE ANN (NEE GIBSON)
November 6, 1958 – July 13, 2009

Our beloved Ann passed away peacefully at Victoria Hospice, surrounded by her loved ones on July 13, 2009. She is survived by her loving parents, Norma and Stewart Gibson; her devoted husband and eternal friend, Erwin; her two beloved children, Monica and David; sister, Mary; brother, Robert and families. Ann was predeceased by her brother, Douglas.

Ann was born in Stephenville, Newfoundland but grew up in Dollard-des-Ormeaux – Montreal. She ventured to Calgary in 1975, where she met and married Erwin. In 1985 Edmonton became her home before moving to Victoria, which has been home since 1995.

“Annie” loved everything about living on “the Rock” (Victoria) and would often be heard saying she constantly felt like a tourist in Victoria. Her love for family, friends and life was passionate and she will be greatly missed. In the words of her favorite musical group “She is buying the stairway to heaven”.

Friends are asked to join with the family to celebrate Ann’s life at CHRIST CHURCH CATHDERAL, Quadra and Courtney Streets on Thursday, July 23, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. The Very Reverend Logan McMenamie officiating. In lieu of flowers, kindly make a donation to either the Victoria Hospice Society or The B.C. Cancer Agency.

  1. I was lucky to have her as a friend. We went to our first concert together and bought our first albums together too. I was fortunate to have gone to see her in January and meet the rest of her wonderful family. At my suggestion (with much trepidation) we went to see Gran Torino and had a blast !! We toured around Victoria, she showed me many sights, including the Butchart Gardens, that even in January, were totally breath taking. I met her puppy too.

I had some delays getting into Victoria, but when she met me at the airport the first thing she did was present me with a lighter so I could go for a smoke. (Typical Ann, thinking of someone else ). I still have it, and it will be used to light a candle in her memory when the girls in Montreal can get together to celebrate her life.

I think of her all the time, and my best to all of her family that she left behind. She was a remarkable lady.

I would like to offer my deepest condolences for the loss of such a lovely person. Ann and I go back many many years we met in grade 1 at our elementary school ” Beechwood” Ann and I were always the” tall ones “. There are so many good memories of the early years as well as the latter years at Riverdale. Although we lost touch over the years we were re-united at the re-union and it was like no time had passed we were kids again in High School. When I saw Ann again after all of the years I thought to myself “what a lovely person” and I was lucky to have known her. I was given the opportunity to reminise a few these old times with Ann via mail by making a DVD of some old and new photos of her lovely family and Karen’s trip to visit Ann.
Erwin,Monica & David again my deepest condolences for your loss . May you find comfort in the lovely memories that will live on forever in all of our hearts. Mary

  7. Dear Erwin, Monica, David, and family,

I am shocked and saddened by Ann’s passing. Shocked, because the last time I spoke to Ann, admittedly manny months ago, she sounded so positive. Saddened, because she was such a lovely person, and you all must be feeling such a painful sense of loss, that someone so near and dear to you is gone.

Marnie and I want you to know that our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Please accept our condolences. Leigh and Marnie

  9. Dear Nykamp Family,
I read with sadness of Ann’s passing, my thoughts are with you.
She was a terrific lady and I’ll remember her smile.
    Regards Palvi.

  10. Erwin, David, and Monica:
Ann was a very special person and we will miss her. Even though it has been a few years since those good old hockey days, they were our great social network at the time and Ann was a big part of that connection. Her special help with getting Dennis and I a suite at the Marriot for our special occassion and the many other things she did are memories that will stay close. I wish I could be at the service this week but at least know my thoughts and heart are with you.
