June 27, 1959 - September 10, 2023

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved family member Susan Isabel Andrew.  Susan passed away peacefully on September 10, 2023, in Victoria British Columbia.

Susan was born on June 27, 1959 in St. John, New Brunswick, and was the youngest of five children. She was the devoted daughter of Isabel and Frank Andrew and loving younger sister to Rosemary Del Degan, all of whom predeceased her.

Susan will be deeply missed by brothers Bill (Denise), Frank (SanSan), John (Sue) and brother-in-law Aldo Del Degan as well as by nieces and a nephew, Jessica (John), Marc (Jenia), Marion (Jeff), Kaitlyn (Kyle), Laura (Tyler) and Mary (Matt).  Susan also cherished her great nieces and nephews, Isabel and William, Nicholas and Max, Rooney, Cooper and Piper.

Susan was devoted to family values and traditions. She cared about her family and was always there to provide moral support during difficult times. She loved her parents dearly; she was a true daughter. They instilled in her courage, faithfulness, love and understanding. She formed bonds that connected all her siblings and her family will miss her greatly.

Susan spent most of her adult years living and working in Banff, Alberta. There she formed lasting friendships with countless people. She was known in the Bow Valley for many years as Magpie Sue after working for the Magpie and Stump Restaurant as a cook in the early 80’s and later becoming their general manager.  She was also employed at Wild Bill’s, the Grizzly House, Johnny Rays, The Cake Company and Mountain Business Systems.  She worked for a short time at Club Med in St. Lucia.  She was well-known and respected by many in the small Banff Mountain town.

Though Susan loved the mountains, more recently she decided to try something different and in 2016, she moved to Victoria, British Columbia.  After working in some shorter-term employment, she was hired by BC Ferries.  She loved her work there, was highly regarded by staff and admin, became a trainer and kept new hires under her wing.  Folks liked her gregarious nature and said that she was fun.

Susan’s passing is a great shock to all who knew her.  Following her wishes to be cremated, she will be buried in Banff with a Celebration of Life to be held at the Legion on November 19, 2023.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Royal Canadian Legion No. 26 Col. Moore Branch in Banff Alberta.

Condolences may be offered to the family below.

  1. Sue was the very best,

I worked at the Magpie and Stump, and proudly considered myself as a “Magger”. The duo of Sue and Marla was brilliant, I remember asking if being a Harem at Halloween was okay and Sue’s eyes sparkled and her grin broadened, it became so and it was so ridiculously fun!

Sending love and support to Sue’s family, friends and especially Marla the two of
them were the best, Thelma and Louise duo.

  2. I first met Sue in Banff in the late 80s and our friendship endured for more than 30 years. She was so witty, kind, caring, and thoughtful. So many long late night chats, girls road trips, and countless laughs that I will never forget. We could go a long time without talking and then reconnect like we hadn’t missed a day. I know she was the same with so many. It was lovely to meet some of her family and no surprise to see how many people adored her. Her final resting place is beautiful, under the mountains she loved so much. I will visit her there when I can. Deepest condolences to her family and friends. Love you forever Sue.

  3. Thanks for the memories and the friendship that now seem so long ago and far away. Rest easy Sue.

  4. Working with Susan was a great privilege. She was always ready to learn and worked hard to support the team at BCF and our customers. Her friendly manner and smile are missed. My thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends.

  5. My sincere condolences to all of Sue’s family. We were neighbours during the years that Sue managed the property next to us! Sue was wonderful. Always up for a chat. Her warm smile and friendly personality could light up a room. I was very surprised to hear of her passing. She will be missed by so many people. Friends and Family. We will all miss her!

  6. I worked with Sue at the Magpie & Stump from when she started until I left Banff in 1984. She was a pleasure to work with and I remember her joy for life & friends. I was shocked to hear of her passing and I will miss her presence in this world. <3

  7. I met Sue at Bow Valley Community College about 10 years ago. We have quite the little group of girls and worked on this amazing project the 4 of us were given. Because of all the diverse input from everyone and come of Sus’s crazy ideas, our presentation was given excellent marks and used by the school as a project example of what can be done when everyone puts their heads together. I still have the project and will never forget the fun we had! Before leaving for BC Sue donated some horse items to me which I will keep and remember her by. She will be missed by everyone.

  8. As a new hire at BC Ferries I was so fortunate to have Susan as my ‘buddy’. I was hired during COVID, so we met ‘virtually’ and worked alongside each other electronically. Susan provided me with the best support. Her kind and calm voice, walked me through some tough scenarios. Susan continued to cheer me on. I was so excited when we returned to the office so I could actually meet my ‘buddy’. Susan’s smile and sparkling eyes just lit up the room. Our work can be challenging and Susan was always so kind and gracious with each customer and co-worker too. Susan will be deeply missed. My condolences to all her friends and family.
