January 23, 1927 – April 6, 2020

We are sad to announce the peaceful passing of our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother at home, surrounded by family, at the age of 93.  Predeceased in 2007 by Joe, her loving husband of 57 years.  Survived by 9 children:  Mary Anne (Allan), Janet (George), Paul (Gina), Theresa (Dennis), Monica (Michael), Mark (Clara), Cecelia (Greg), Joan (Bernie), Michelle (Garry); 19 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.  Also many nieces and nephews.

Mom was proud to be a second generation Victorian and a graduate of Victoria High School.  She was happy and proud to remain in the Fairfield home that she and Dad built in 1950.  Mom loved to laugh, play games and spend time at Shawnigan with her family.  She loved her china painting, crocheting and projects for the family.  For many years she entered her crafts, needlework and baking at the Saanich Fair and won many ribbons for her handiwork.

Much gratitude to the wonderful ladies of Pacific Coast Health Services, especially Caprice & Hilary for all their care and Scrabble games.  Also special thanks to the Island Health homecare workers and nurses, for their support and guidance.

Due to current Covid19 restrictions, there will be a private family Funeral Mass at St. Patrick’s Parish with Fr. William Hann officiating.  Interment will be at Royal Oak Burial Park.  Flowers gratefully declined but if desired donations can be made to Victoria Women’s Transition House Society.  We thank all family and friends for their kindness and support during this time.

Condolences may be offered to the family below.

  1. I just heard the sad news, so sorry and will always remember Susie as the Queen of Moss Street. Our young childhood days growing up across the Street from the Griffins was always exciting and active. We spent all the daylight hours playing in their back yard on the swings or up and down Moss Street causing havoc, and Susie was always keeping an eye out making sure all were safe. There was the odd broken bone or stitches required in those days as we kids played outside, no screen time! In Susie’s later years when I visited our Old Moss Street home across the street, I would always try to pop across to visit Susie, get the family updates and just listen to Susie with a very sharp mind and a great smile.

  2. Our sincerest sympathies to your family. My mother, Em Blatchford (nee Baldock), was Susie’s cousin. They were born at opposite ends of the same year (my mom in December of 1927). My mom tells me that until recently, they would call each other about New Years to wish each other a Happy Birthday and to catch up. My mom has very fond memories of her childhood and teen years in Victoria with Susie and the rest of the Colbert family.
Please know that we are thinking and remembering her at this time.
Love from Em and the rest of the Blatchford family

  3. I was sorry to hear of Susie’s passing and know she will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. Susie was delightful to be with and I really enjoyed visiting for as long as I did. Her sense of humour and love of Scrabble was second to none and I have many happy memories.
Susie has a wonderful caring family and it was a pleasure to meet you all.

  4. Dear Mary Anne & Family

Dave and I extend our deepest sympathy to you and yours at this time. Your mom always had a great smile and contagious laugh. May good memories ease your grief at this time. Thinking of you all.

With love Dave & Ann Nute
