  1. Although we hadn’t seen Sam for many years, John and I remember him so vividly as a happy, kind-hearted, beautiful boy with a zest for life. He played baseball with our son Edward and was part of our circle of neighbours, people who are there and form a community. I lamented Sam’s loss to Edward and he responded by saying that in remembering Sam, he would cherish all his friends more. Please accept our sincere condolences.

  2. Dear Harry, Jan and Wes,

  5. It started with the caring, curious and kind kid I met at Monterey, to the intelligent ambitious young man I often saw at Uvic. Sam was always completely present, and his genuine care for others was always noticeable. His warmth, laughter and kind soul will be missed.

  6. Dear Harry, Jan, and Wes:
The news of Sam’s passing truly broke my heart. He was such an incredible person his entire life. From when he was a little kid starting in kindergarten to the to the last time we raised a glass together, I don’t have a single memory of him without that warm cheeky smile on his face and the pure kindness in his heart. Sam’s radiant personality will forever shine on in the memories of all of us lucky to have known him and call him our friend. Sam, if you’re not too busy on the other side, please come haunt me sometime. I’ll miss your spirit and humour, my friend.

  7. My sincerest condolences to Sam’s family. I played baseball and went to high school with him, and knew him to be a man of great character and ability. May he rest in peace.

  8. I had the privilege of teaching Sam Constitutional Law during his time at UVicLaw. I was in awe of the twinkle in his eye and his brilliant mind. To his friends, classmates and family, sending love at the loss of such an extraordinary young man. Gillian Calder

  10. Dear Jan, Harry and Wes

We just heard about your great loss late last night from Colin. We are so deeply saddened. Sam was Colin’s very best friend and such an inspiration to him, they had so much fun together and shared so deeply all those years of sleepovers, video games, baseball, tubeing at the lake and birthday parties. They were always laughing and having fun right to adulthood. Sam was always so good natured, with his beautiful smile and unforgettable eyes, we all loved having him over to stay.. We are feeling devastated by his loss and are holding him tenderly in our hearts. We send you our love and prayers.
